After Struggling With Policy Questions, Ocasio-Cortez Claims It’s Better to Be ‘Morally Right’ Than Factual

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) admitted that she believes it is more important to be morally right than to be factually correct.

Ocasio-Cortez has bobbled many policy questions, most of which relate to her plan to pay for expensive socialist policies, though she has tripped up on a few answers relating to other topics including history and the Middle East.

During an interview on “60 Minutes” with Anderson Cooper, Ocasio-Cortez responded to a question about one of the several policy statements she has incorrectly lobbed onto her Twitter feed. Cooper asked her about her tweet regarding Pentagon spending.

As IJR previously reported, the Washington Post gave Ocasio-Cortez “Four Pinocchios” for her misleading statement.

When Copper pressed her on this and other false statements she has made, Ocasio-Cortez said that it was more important to be “morally right” than precisely accurate in her speech.

Watch:

“If people really want to blow up one figure here or one word there, I would argue they’re missing the forest for the trees. I think there’s a lot of people more concerned about being precisely, factually, and semantically correct than about being morally right.”

Cooper pressed her on this, commenting, “But being factually right is important.”

Ocasio-Cortez agreed, saying, “It’s absolutely important, and whenever I make a mistake, I say, ‘Okay, that was clumsy.’ And then I restate what my point was.”

The congresswoman added that her incorrect statements are not as bad as the president’s because, according to her, her mistakes are done on the moral high ground.

“It’s not the same thing as the president lying about immigrants,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “It’s not the same thing at all.”

Unfortunately for Ocasio-Cortez, many believe that an incorrect statement is still incorrect, no matter the moral positionality. Sever took to Twitter to mock the congresswoman for her statements:

This was not Ocasio-Cortez’s only eyebrow-raising comment from her interview with Cooper. As IJR previously reported, she also claimed that there was “no question” that President Donald Trump was a racist.
