BOOM! Denzel Washington SHUTS DOWN Meryl Streep and Hollywood Elite

Hollywood’s elite just got together to pat themselves and the back and scold the rest of American for electing Donald Trump. But legendary actor Denzel Washington had a harsh dose of reality for his more entitled colleagues.

People like Meryl Streep and Jimmy Fallon like to see themselves as the pinnacle of our society. But Washington said they’re wrong. It’s average Americans who make America great.

The same average Americans who voted for Donald Trump because they are sick and tired of the elitist attitude of people like Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Meryl Streep, etc.

At a roundtable discussion with other actors, Washington told his Hollywood colleagues to get off their high horses.

“…people say: ‘Oh, the difficulty of making a movie.’ I’m like, listen, send your son to Iraq–that’s difficult. It’s just a movie. It’s like, relax. I don’t play that precious nonsense.”

Rather than seeing themselves as entitled to tell the rest of American what to do, Washington said fellow actors should be on their knees thanking Americans for the chance to do what they do.

“Making a movie is a luxury,” he stressed. “It’s an opportunity, and most importantly, it’s a gift. Obviously, everybody here is talented enough to do that, but don’t get it twisted. It’s just a movie. It ain’t that big a deal.”

Finally, some truth from Hollywood.

Denzel Washington has always had his feet firmly planted in the truth and he’s also a patriot. I watched “Pelican Brieff” a few nights ago and he is brilliant. It’s nice to see an intelligent black man who did not for obummer’s drivel and pop.

    • Notaliberal Buttrumpisafuckup

All he did was say that being a soldier is harder than being a movie star. Which, no shit, anyone would agree with that.

Denzel has always been a firm democrat. But, I know how facts bother the shit out of you people.

Thank you Denzel., but, if you were in the audience at the golden globes, you should’ve stood up, walked over to the stage and totally contrast Streep’s pompous rant on Trump. Only then would you have an impact with true Americans. You and many others allowed Streep to get away with hatred rants for Trump-same as Kopernick, Beyonce, Megyn Kelley and many other celebs.

“Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country.” ~ John F. Kennedy, 35th President of the United States, Democrat.

So, he had a very good message back then, unfortunately, too many folks have not been asking what they can do and then doing it, they mostly want to know what the government is going to do for them, and what they can have.

So, now is the time … get up, get moving, get to work, get constructive, get to loving your neighbors, get to laughing, get to living, get to loving life, and guess what, we’ll soon be making it great to live in the U.S.A. again!

  9. Marianne

I didn’t hear any endorsement in Denzel’s comments about politics, which I love, because I want to be entertained or emotionally moved, cry, laugh and get angry at the movies. Actors get paid to bring this out and if they do, they succeed. Leave politics in Washington, D.C… Thank you Denzel for making me want to go to the movies.

  10. Ms Nasty

    January 10, 2017 at 5:36 pm

Really? He didn’t say a word about Trump. All he said was that making a movie is a luxury and cannot be equated to the jobs that average Americans do. Oh, and letter of fact, the MAJORITY of the average Americans actually voted for Clinton. And until the President elect learns to shut up and stop throwing temper tantrums every time he is criticized, the majority of this country will continue to belittle him. Just the way you all belittled Obama for the color of his skin and Clinton for being a woman. Take your oompa loompa, orange haired toddler and get busy leading or get the hell out of my country!

  11. Gayla

    January 10, 2017 at 5:39 pm

I’m confused how this “Shuts down Meryl Streep” … what he said is common sense, nothing political whatsoever. Some people see actors as more than human. They work just like us, of course they make more money… but they’re just one bad movie away from doing commercials too. I love ❤️ love ❤️ love ❤️ Denzel Washington to the core, the title to this is so off base from what he was trying to convey. And it was filmed in December 2016 (airdate January 20th) … so no one who’s on the show was shutting down anyone. They were speaking about their past, the jobs they had before becoming an actor. Just regular people trying to survive.

What he said is so true!!! Meryl Streep and Jimmy Fallon were preaching to the choir which anyone can do; it doesn’t take guts. I don’t like either one of them but I was disappointed in what they said on national television. They have everything; let them go into the inner cities and say this. Booooo!

  16. Roger parent

    January 10, 2017 at 6:06 pm

Streep did not say anything about Trump’s political ideas – only his mocking of another human being who had physical disabilities. If that is what you want a President to show and do, what human decency do you expect from others !

Washington has the right to say what he said but he is not a spokesman for the average person either.

I feel we finally have a strong President and not a Puppet we’ve had for the past several years. All we can do as Americans is be Strong and Positive. A few things that were ignored:

    1) “Send your son to Iraq – that’s difficult”, yeah, he never sent his son to Iraq.
    2) He said “I take what talent I’ve been given seriously”… then why’d he basically call what he does a joke?
    3) Here’s your “BOOM!” – Denzel SUPPORTED OBAMA in 2008.

It’s all right there on his wikipedia.

I like Denzel, but as for other Celebs that imitate other real people, not themselves, and are chameleons of other peoples lives, & have no grasp on reality, who have no concept of having their own thoughts, or opinions, but act out and sing out other peoples emotions and experiences, I don’t want to here what you are saying unless you are reading a movie script.

Years ago Marlin Brando pulled the same crap that Meryl Streep just pulled last night! Using the stage for Political Means during a totally different event!
Actors and Actresses are people who basically don’t know who they are or what they stand for! Becoming other people in movies is a easy hiding place and a great way to make way too much money!
They are not only out of touch with real people they are lost in a world of make believe and don’t know how to help anyone in the real world. Meryl Streep pulled a cheap trick on America and needs to travel to Chicago with our outgoing Muslim President and interview the (4) Black Monsters that just tortured a disabled White (18) year old male mentioning Donald Trump! Stop the Violence Meryl Streep with your petty hate!

She did not know or want to know the reason of the video she showed. Did she have Trumps permission to do this?? Is it legal to do this to someone without their permission??Your nasty ways with you buddy is going to start ending. That is why they voted for Trump, to put some honor back in this country. Mary Ann Bensch: President-Elect Trump doesn’t need to give anyone permission who wants to criticize him, just as President Obama didn’t. In this country anyone has the right to criticize their president. And you have to get used to the fact, that Trump will be criticized by his haters no less than Obama was by his. Thank you, Mr. Washington, for speaking for those of us who share your feelings. I don’t know why people with a talent for acting think of themselves as so very special. I have a talent for music which I share every week with my church. Do I have the right or even the obligation to tell others how to think? No, I do not. We all have talents. Actors are no different from the rest of us except, perhaps, for having an out of control ego.

Nowhere in the video above did Washington say anything about Streep and her remarks at the GG. This video was taped before the GG and the entire video will be on HBO on 1/15. Of course, he’s saying making a movie isn’t dangerous like being a soldier in Iraq. But, how does that relate to anything Streep said? It doesn’t. She has a right to her opinion and a right to get on her soapbox and say it. And, I think she was quite respectful – she didn’t call Trump a derogatory name, unlike what Trump has called many women.

But I also conversely believe that her venting/spewing political philosophy/ideology diatribes at a Golden Globes Awards Ceremony was/is inappropriate.

Danzel Washington I would like to thank you for what you just said,I had giving up on Hollywood for the most part.I know that there are a few actors and actresses that have some sense but for the most part lately most have shown they haven’t.It just seems that these actors and actresses have forgotten just who it is that has raised them to the status of superstars. It wasn’t these congressmen and women and it wasn’t the senators and it wasn’t the Hillary Clintons or the Obama’s.It was the average working class person that spent their hard earned money to go see a movie they made,It was the average person that voted for Trump that made these actors and actresses superstars and made them think that they were above the average person,But without the average person that they just trashed on national TV for voting for Trump they wouldn’t have that superstar status and the same average person that gave them that status can take that status away. They seem to forget that when they get up on stage and make fools out of them selves like Fallon and Streep did at the Golden Globes. It’s ahamed they used that to push their political views on people that just wanted to see awards show, and enjoy a night in front of the TV,Instead we had to listen to the stupid political crap from a few, that should have just kept their mouths shut.

Just a year or so ago, he was visiting a military base ~ I think it was an Army base near New Orleans or somewhere in Louisiana, that had built several expensive , large well-equipped housing for U.S. vets and medical care for “wounded warriors” He was very impressed, and asked how much cost to build another one. Some huge cost was quoted to him, and he stopped, pulled out his check-book, immediately wrote a check for the entire cost and handed it over without a word ! I can not say enough about this wonderful man with a heart of GOLD ! This was NEVER mentioned in the mainstream news media ! I have nothing but the highest esteem and admiration for this great American, Mr. Denzel Washington ! God bless you sir !

Congratulations Mr Washington. You are 1 in a million. I’ve always liked you & your movies, now I love you. You are a very rare breed these days, not because your black, but because you have morals, integrity, a heart & soul, you have substance, you care about people, you are honest & you say it as it is. You deserve to be respected by everyone, black & white, because you are a very smart & educated man …If you ever want to move to Australia & take up politics, you’ll definately get my vote…You on your own would do a better job than all of our polititions put together…well done & well said.ony

Many applauded Meryl.Jimmy is loved. It took courage to step out and use their stage for something more than a pedestal and an instrument of praise ofor admiration for their craft. They spoke the truth. The truth often hurts. It’s not about who won the presidency. Its about common human decency. Its about respect. Respect for others and self. Its about being responsible for your words. Words uttered reflects the heart. Look at all the crazies that have come out of the wood work. Out of the closets. Out of the dark. They say & do whatever and hurt whoever. They don’the take responsibility. The camouflage is off. If Denzel cannot see that, then he is shallow, self centered, egostical and not worthy of any applause. As an African American should be ashamed of himself.

This man is a good man. He has always had his values in order, and I don’t believe there is anyone anywhere who will ever change that. Denzel Washington is so very talented that I am surprised he is not a role model for other young people. I guess he’s not loud or violent enough in his private life … I admire you, Mr. Washington, and I am so proud of you!

I don’t see this as just a conservative point of view. There are plenty of working class average American people who agree with Mr. Washington (about Hollywood and some peoples feelings of entitlement) who did not vote for Trump. Bernie Sanders spoke out for working people and the people backed him up. Nope, I am not a Democrat. I was one for a few months. When the DNC screwed Bernie they lost me forever. Nope, I am not a Republican. I am an Independent American voter and I vote my conscience regardless of the party affiliation. I agree that it is time for people to stop trashing each other over the past election and start working toward the future by raising up good, honest, compassionate and responsible people to take action at all levels of government. Let’s stop arguing and start educating everyone about the fundamentals of government and the responsibilities of being an American. We are all in this country together. Wasn’t it Benjamin Franklin who said something about “We must all hang together or we will surely hang separately” ?

He”s right. It’s only a movie. No danger involved. And most of the time no talent needed. Getting paid millions for retending. Our Military put their lives on the line and get paid diddly squat. And if injured can’t even get cared for. So give your money to the Veterans instead of some stupid movie.

I must disagree with Denzel on this point as an artist. Art is more important than what he has suggested in his comment. “It’s just a movie. It ain’t that big a deal.” It is more than entertainment. It actually IS a big deal.
Look at movies like To kill a Mockingbird, Philadelphia, Metropolis, The Battle of Algiers,
2001: A space odyssey, Roots. All had a strong effect on how society looked at itself. Not all movies do this, but this certainly is a very important part of why people make movies. It isn’t of course just movies. The graphic arts like Picasso’s “Guernica”, Musicians like Billie Holiday’s “Strange Fruit”, photography like “The Migrant Mother” by Dorothea Lange.
Art allows us to explain, to criticise, to analyse and to understand our society. A society which doesn’t think about itself is a dead society.

I tried to stay away from politics in this comment, but art is what I do. And I feel very strongly that art is a powerful force of change in this world, and I feel that this is being forgotten.

Doesn’t sound like he said anything to Meryl Streep. What he said had nothing to do with her speech. Like it or not, celebrities have a voice, she used hers to exercise her free speech. So it’s okay for trump to say and do anything, but not okay for people to stand up to him for his hypocrisy?

  94. Bob

    January 11, 2017 at 3:11 pm

He is right. The average working person puts up with a lot of stress on their job for a lot less money and very few, if any, perks. Could say a lot more but the working person understands what I am saying.

  95. David

    January 11, 2017 at 3:12 pm

You people do realize that more ‘average Americans’ voted for the other guy right? If you want to respect what the ‘average American’ wants, then listen to everyone and do what MORE Americans want. Treat everyone equally. Don’t punish or bully those who’s views oppose yours. Why is Meryl Streep under fire? because she spoke out against bullying? Without even naming Trump? What does it say about Trump if she can talk about him bullying others without naming him and yet we all know who she’s talking about?

Universally hated library’s chiming in. I agree with everything Mr. Washington said, I would just like to clarify his comments were not in response to nor in anyway related to Meryl Streep comments at the Gokden Globes. I don’t even understand how this connection was made.

  97. Richard

    January 11, 2017 at 3:39 pm

Maybe Denzel should consider getting involved in running for office. Ronald Regan did it. The African American community and our country could use some folks with their feet on the ground and he could be a great example.

  98. Duane Perry

    January 11, 2017 at 4:35 pm

This implies that he is responding to Streep’s comments. This tape was from a month ago, before her comments. You can argue that this was not the proper time for political comment but she has the right. If you believe in something you should speak out. If I say something, I am lucky if two people listen. When she speaks, millions hear what she says.

  99. Dennis Reid

    January 11, 2017 at 4:39 pm

You’re right Danzel it’s no big deal the movies are only entertainment for “the people” that’s all if they don’t entertain us the actors suffer it’s as simple as that but somehow “Hollywood” has turned it into they are the direction of the world. They are not, the people want to forget, laugh, cry, and enjoy themselves every once and awhile. Then the movie ends and they go back to doing what they do to make the world what it is. That’s all it is, really.

I love Denzel, he is so RIGHT ON! His humble heart resonates with me. What doesn’t is this article, The video posted to YouTube a month ago. The truth speaks for itself. If you want people to read your articles, you must be trusted. This is unethical reporting, and you’re blowing it.

  107. Jana J. Monji

    January 11, 2017 at 7:15 pm

This article seems to be reaching. At the Golden Globes, Streep did address privilege. She said: “Once when I was standing around on the set one day, whining about something, you know, we were going to work through supper or the long hours or whatever, Tommy Lee Jones said to me, ‘Isn’t it such a privilege, Meryl, just to be an actor?’”

The full text of Streep’s speech is readily available. It doesn’t seem that Washington was directly addressing Streep nor the main thrust of her short speech.

  108. Rita KS

  110. Jess

    January 11, 2017 at 8:24 pm

Bullshit. Denzel didn’t shut down Streep. He actually said the exact same thing Streep said!

Denzel Washington: “Making a movie is a luxury. It’s an opportunity, and most importantly, it’s a gift.”

Meryl Streep: “Once when I was standing around on the set one day whining about something, we were going to work through supper, or the long hours or whatever, Tommy Lee Jones said to me, isn’t it such a privilege, Meryl, just to be an actor. Yeah, it is. And we have to remind each other of the privilege and the responsibility of the act of empathy.”

  112. Bob Hansen

    January 11, 2017 at 11:20 pm

You realize that he made this comment back in December in an interview that had nothing to do with Meryl Streep or even politics.

You took something completely out of context and made a false article out of it.

This quote was taken from a video of a “Director Roundtable” published by the Hollywood Reporter on 14 December 2016. Washington was asked about his worst job and said that before becoming an actor, he had been a garbage man and a postal worker. The actor went on to declare that he was aware that making movies was a luxury and that other people had much more difficult professions.

Here is the link to the ACTUAL interview:

Hoorah, YAY, thank you Denzel Washington, a true American and amazing Actor. I hope you win for “FENCES.” I’m from near your hometown. I also disagree with Meryl Streep about diverse people, there are actually less than .05% of diversity in Hollywood. Hollywood is riddled with white, liberal elitists who control everything from political stories to casting and pretty much control puppets’ destinies regardless of talent, dedication and comment. Also, I don’t mean to be a skeptic but amidst the whirlwind of all forms of media articles and comments about Meryl Streep’s speech, all the out of touch supporters like Maddona, Streisand, etc., there are more questions than answers regarding Streep’s unfactual accusation of America’s presidential elect bullying Serge Kovaleski, a disabled reporter. Did Serge Kovaleski ever accuse Trump of bullying him? I remind everyone that Serge is a very intelligent, fully competent human being and man enough to speak up and write for himself. Do you honestly think the pity and patronizing based solely on Streep’s opinion was the right thing to do during the 2017 Golden Globe Awards venue. Isn’t what Streep did more of a Stalinist approach and communist? I mean 5 minutes on national TV patronizing a bright, talented journalist who happens to also be a disabled man, is desperate, pathetic and crazy. Just what was she thinking?
