Democrats are projected to take the majority in the House of Representatives, Fox News is projecting, though at this time — approximately 9:30 pm EST — the margin by which Democrats will control the House is unknown.
An early two-seat Democrat pickup signaled something of a “blue trickle”; although Democrats lost some early key races, they retained control in several key House races, giving them the seats necessary to obtain a narrow margin.
At the time of publication, the polling site 538 predicts that the margin of control will be narrow, perhaps only one or two seats.
The Democrats who occupy those pickup seats will likely determine the Democratic agenda. So far, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is expected to return to her position as Speaker of the House, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) will now control the House Oversight Committee, signaling a new round of investigations into President Donald Trump, and Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) will likely now control the House Financial Services Committee.
At least 85 Democrats have, however, signed a pledge to keep Pelosi out of the Speaker’s role, which could cause internal troubles almost immediately for Democrats in the House. A national rift between moderates and progressives will likely play out in the Democrats’ leadership contests, set to take place as soon as they are officially in control.
Republicans are projected to hold on to the Senate, gaining at least one seat. The GOP’s hold on the Senate will likely keep impeachment off the table (though there’s no guarantee), and will preserve the judicial nomination process.
