Some state legislators in California are preparing to push legislation that would allow illegal immigrants to receive Medicaid funding for healthcare.
According to the Los Angeles Times, a new wave of recently elected Democrats are making the push to extend the healthcare service to all low-income individuals, regardless of legal status. The report stated that this plan could “test the boundaries of a state budget” and potentially drain cash reserves.
California already provides Medicaid for undocumented children under the age of 19. This plan would extend to all adults earning less than $17,000 per year.
According to the Washington Examiner, this same bill was proposed last year, but it was not voted on. When they ran the numbers on last year’s bill, California’s legislator estimated that there were 1.8 million illegal immigrants living in the state. Of those, 1.2 million would be eligible for this expanded Medicaid service.
California’s Legislative Analyst’s Office claimed that this bill could cost Californians around $3 billion each year. There are also concerns that the bill would incentivize more illegal families to come to the state, which would add even more expenses.
Several Republicans took to Twitter to criticize California’s proposal.
Believe it or not, but California Democrats are trying to pass a bill that would give Medicaid benefits to illegal immigrants.
Policies like that wouldn’t just cost taxpayers billions, they'd encourage more people to enter our country unlawfully.https://t.co/lkxRwfJWlG

For all those worried about bankrupting Medicaid I imagine this would rapidly accelerate the process. As usual Democrats care more about people who aren’t Americans than our own citizens. https://t.co/3H2qbxl5lP

As IJR previously reported, California has a plethora of problems they are still failing to address, especially when it comes to homelessness. In San Francisco, for example, they have deployed a “poop patrol” to deal with all of the human waste in the streets because of the booming homeless population.
The recent wildfires have only expanded that homeless population, according to a report by the New York Times. Shelters in the area have maxed out and rebuilding could take years.
It looks like there are many issues for the California state legislature to focus their resources on for the people in the state legally, yet they seem to be moving full steam ahead siphoning off more of those resources to those in the state illegally.
