Country music legend Dolly Parton is known for her bubbly personality, which is why it came as a surprise to her fans when she recently opened up about her very tragic past in a series of interviews for a new book about her life.
Daily Mail reported that Parton just revealed that she came very close to killing herself in the 1980s after getting her heart broken by a man she was in love with. She had also gained fifty pounds from binge eating, was suffering from internal bleeding, and had been forced to cancel a tour due to health problems. All of this combined to push Parton over the edge.
“I was sitting upstairs in my bedroom one afternoon when I noticed in the nightstand drawer my gun that I keep for burglars. I looked at it a long time… Then, just as I picked it up, just to hold it and look at it for a moment, our little dog, Popeye, came running up the stairs,” Parton recounted. “The tap-tap-tap of his paws jolted me back to reality I suddenly froze. I put the gun down. Then I prayed. I kinda believe Popeye was a spiritual messenger from God.”
“I don’t think I’d have done it, killed myself, but I can’t say for sure,” she continued. “Now that I’ve gone through that terrible moment, I can certainly understand the possibilities even for someone solid like me if the pain gets bad enough.”
These interviews were conducted with Parton for the upcoming book Dolly on Dolly, Interviews and Encounters with Dolly Parton, which was edited by Randy L. Schmidt.
We thank God that Dolly Parton saw the light and did not kill herself that day. SHARE this story if you LOVE Dolly Parton!
