Hilario Yanez, a “Dreamer” who was brought to the United States at only 1 year old, praised President Donald Trump on Saturday for his proposed solution to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
“Let me begin by first thanking Donald Trump for his leadership, his compassion and also the courage to take on this issue,” he told Fox News. “Here’s a guy who wants to provide a pathway to citizenship for myself and really make a difference in my life.”
Yanez advocated for border security and a wall, if it’s necessary, to prevent the United States from ending up in this situation again.
He called the diversity lottery “outdated” and recommended an immigration system based on skills so immigrants who come to America can contribute to the economy right away.
Yanez also countered the narrative that the real champions of “Dreamers” are the Democrats.
He said leaders such as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) have no “clear message” and have been using DACA recipients “as pawns.”
“They never should have shut down the government over DACA,” he said. “We should have never held our American people and our military hostage.”
He added there’s “plenty of time” to fix DACA, and Republicans have shown they’re willing to find a solution.
Yanez also outlined some of the hardships he’s had in his life but said his faith in God, his family, and working hard got him through.
“When I hear the national anthem, I get goosebumps all over me,” he said. “I would do anything to serve in this country, to die for this country, and all I need is a chance.”
