Jordin Sparks Sings Anthem During NFL Game — but Everyone is Discussing What Was Written on Her Hand

Jordin Sparks, onetime “American Idol” winner, sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” during Monday night’s NFL game featuring the Dallas Cowboys and the Arizona Cardinals.

Most of the attention Monday night was focused on the Cowboys’ decision to both kneel and stand during the pregame ceremony, but without speaking, Sparks seemed to issue her own message on the state of affairs in the United States.

What did she do?

Sparks had a message scrawled on her hand in what appeared to be black marker that was highly visible as she sang the national anthem.

The message was a simple Scripture reference — Proverbs 31:8-9, which says:

8 Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves,
for the rights of all who are destitute.
9 Speak up and judge fairly;
defend the rights of the poor and needy.

What has Sparks said about her politics and faith in the past?

Sparks tweeted on President Donald Trump’s 2017 Inauguration Day that she would support him simply on the grounds that he is president of the United States.

“I’ve had the amazing opportunity to meet, speak to & perform for multiple Presidents over the years. Clinton, Bushx2, Obama … and no matter who’s in Office, it’s an honor,” she wrote. “I was raised to show respect to everyone, President or not.”

“I’ve prayed for each administration and will continue to pray for the former Presidents & my prayer remains the same for the 45th,” Sparks continued. “‘For God to grant discernment and the wisdom in decisions domestic & abroad and in keeping the country safe & united. To keep music/arts in schools, to continuously uplift the youth for they are the future. And, for compassion, understanding & justice for all.’ It may not be the popular thing, but it is the right thing.”

Sparks has made no bones about being unabashedly vocal regarding her Christian beliefs.

When former President Barack Obama was re-elected in 2012, Sparks congratulated him on his win, but reminded readers that that “Jesus is King.”

“Congrats 2 our President! What a race! Lets [sic] unite, work together & be one again! No matter who is President, Jesus is King! #Titus31&2,” Sparks wrote on Twitter.
