Justice Gorsuch Made Supreme Court History with Brand New Hire for 2018 Term

In an apparent first at the U.S. Supreme Court, Justice Neil Gorsuch has hired a Native American clerk for the 2018 term.

The clerk, Tobi Merritt Edwards Young, is an enrolled citizen of the Chickasaw Nation from Midwest City, Oklahoma, and has worked for Gorsuch since the early days of President George W. Bush’s administration.

“I hope that if other Chickasaws read about my experiences, they will recognize that nothing stops them from pursuing any dream that they have too,” Young said in a Chickasaw Nation news release.

“Somebody from where they are from is going to be working every day at the Supreme Court, and there’s no reason that there shouldn’t be many more to come.”

Gorsuch and Young appear to have a professional relationship spanning almost two decades.

Young worked under Gorsuch’s supervision in the Civil Rights Division at the U.S. Department of Justice after graduating from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 2003.

He later helped her secure a clerkship for Judge Jerome Holmes on the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, shortly after his own appointment to that court.

Young served on the team of lawyers who helped Gorsuch prepare for his confirmation hearings in 2017.

She is currently general counsel and staff secretary for the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas.

Other clerks Gorsuch has retained for the 2018 term include Ethan Davis of King & Spalding LLP and Paul Mezzina, an alum of the late Justice Antonin Scalia’s chambers.

There are approximately 60,000 enrolled Chickasaw in 2018.

The tribe was among the five Native American societies forcibly moved from the east bank of the Mississippi River on the Trail of Tears.

A National Law Journal study found that 85 percent of Supreme Court clerks since 2005 are white, and approximately two-thirds are male.

I applaud Judge Gorsuch who has confirmed that Conservatives welcome all QUALIFIED and LEGAL ethnicities to support our Great Country. I also congratulate this very accomplished female who has a wonderful heritage to add to our melting pot of the USA.

I am happy for her. But why do we have to look at female, male, black, white, red or purple? Just list qualifications. May the best person get a job. All sexes, faiths, ages, cultures, races, should strive to be the best they can be. The media is responsible for fueling these biases. Stop it!

I agree, Delores. Media keeps racism alive with their obsession with these labels. We are all Americans. The individual’s qualifications are all that should be considered. The more the media harps on our differences, the more those differences divide us into arbitrary camps.

Susan, I absolutely agree with you, but unfortunately if you notice it’s the left leaning liberal democrats and mainstream media that keeps this alive and out in the public eye. Obama did it better then anyone else, that’s the reason America is more divided then ever. It should always be based on a person’s qualifications, but as soon as a conservative does anything it’s they always shine the etnic, race or gender spotlight on it, and if it doesn’t match to their standards, which most of the time it never does, then here come the label name calling.

This is a good thing-congratulations to Miss Young. But, I don’t care about anyone’s skin color, cultural background or sex – I care that it’s the right person with the right skills for the job, and if that’s someone from the Chickasaw nation, then that’s great and so be it.

I think that is wonderful. The American Indians deserve the recognition and you have certainly earned it, through your schooling and work ethic. You ho girl!

There is no doubt that this hiring was meritoriously secured rather than the advantage gained by Fauxahauntis in her rise to the Massassachutes Senator.

I applaud you for your hard work and will try to pray for you on occasions when the LORD leads.

That’s wonderful . Your people deserve to be recognized, because you have earned it through your schooling and work ethic. It isn’t, however, because you are Indian, or a woman. It’s because you earned it. You go girl.

Linda , that has happened to me also many, many times….I have written to Conservative Fighters and never got an answer back…..CF have a page on FB , but FB will not allow us to share any of their stories…I think that stinks and I think Zuckerburg stinks as well…..When he was being grilled by Congress I was allowed to share for a day or two…..Guess he was covering up that he is so biased on those days….Wish something could be done about this..Talk about free speech being halted…FB does it all the time……

I think it’s awesome! And, just think. Mr. Trump could get to appoint a couple more justices. Ruth Bader Ginsburg needed to retire about 10 years ago, & Justice Kennedy is on the verge of it. If that happens, just think what might actually get done! MAGA!

While I applaud his choice, Judge Gorsuch had to announce her race since she doesn’t look American Indian. This is often typical as their ancestry bridges numerous races during the last 250 years.
