Former President Barack Obama came out of self-imposed seclusion this week to deliver a somewhat scathing rebuke to supporters of his own party, saying Democrats need to do more than just mope.
His executive summary: “Vote! Participate! Get involved!” However, this is exactly what people did in New York this past week, and they sent an establishment Democrat packing.
On the heels of Rep. Joe Crowley’s stunning defeat at the hands of upstart Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the Democratic Party shows no signs they understand there is a sea change afoot.
Crowley out-raised Ocasio-Cortez by a 10 to 1 ratio — $3.4 million to $313,000 — and still was crushed in the primary. Yet, Obama seems to only be showing up to high-priced, high-profile events.
He delivered his speech at a fundraiser hosted at a multi-million home belonging to a supporter and encouraged those present not to expect events to be “entertaining all the time.”
However, given the setting that night, many of his comments ring a bit hollow in the wake of last week’s stunning primary collapse in New York.
The audience at the event was entertained by a performance from platinum-selling pop star Christina Aguilera. A place at the table for these events ranges into the six figures — a recent appearance cost $237,300 per couple to attend.
President Obama followed it up with an appearance on behalf of Nancy Pelosi, where he praised her past career and future potential.
“Nancy I believe is one of the greatest Speakers we ever had and will once again be one of the greatest Speakers we ever have after we get through this cycle" -President Obama https://t.co/45vKyXdkqj
— Nancy Pelosi (@TeamPelosi) July 1, 2018
Obama’s endorsement is shocking in the wake of Politico’s earlier report that a swath of Democratic challengers for House seats have all stood firm that they would not vote for her if they win.
Should the Democrats re-take the House, Pelosi has remained firm that she plans to run for Speaker, saying “it’s important that it not be five white guys at the table.”
It is no strange coincidence that two of the candidates too often cited as potential to challenge her are Minority Whip Steny Hoyer and the recently deposed Joe Crowley. Democrats continue to show how out-of-touch they are with the American electorate.
And while their standard-bearer Obama pines that sometimes supporting the party means you are “in a church basement making phone calls and eating cold pizza,” one might wonder when the last time was that he ate a cold Papa John’s.
