‘She Made Herself a Laughingstock’: Cheney Clocks Elizabeth Warren for Misrepresenting Her Heritage

Congresswoman Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) clocked Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) for misrepresenting her heritage on an application to the Texas Bar.

Warren has been embroiled in a scandal about her alleged Native American heritage for years, but her 2020 presidential bid launched her ancestry back into the headlines. Last week, an application to the Texas Bar revealed that Warren had listed herself as an American Indian, despite having very little Native American DNA and not having tribal citizenship.

President Donald Trump has been a longtime critic of Warren’s claims to Native American heritage. In a tweet on Saturday, the president repeated his joke of calling her Pocahontas and made a reference to seeing her on the 2020 campaign trail.

Many people found the president’s use of the phrase “trail” to be in poor taste because of the atrocities that occurred against Native Americans on the of the Trail of Tears.

During an interview on “State of the Union,” Tapper asked Cheney about the tweet, emphasizing her representation of thousands of Native Americans in Wyoming. The congresswoman claimed that Warren’s use of Native American ancestry should be the focus.

Watch:

“I have concerns about somebody like Elizabeth Warren pretending to be a Native American. You’re absolutely right, I do represent thousands of Native Americans here in Wyoming and the notion that anybody of any political party would pretend that they were a member of a tribe or pretend that they were Native American and would do it as she seems to have done it in order to get benefits, that is, in my view, the disgrace.”

Cheney also claimed that Warren deserves to be the butt of the joke, saying, “She made herself a laughingstock.”

The congresswoman also noted that she hopes the Texas Bar looks into the application Warren issued to see if she gave false information. Cheney pointed to the application card and said, “One wonders whether or not that’s grounds for disbarment.”
