Sports Pundits Criticize Steelers’ Villanueva For Being The Only Team Member To Stand For The Anthem [VIDEO]

Fox Sports commentators Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe criticized the Steelers’ Alejandro Villanueva, a former Army ranger, for being the only team member to stand for the national anthem Sunday.

While the Steelers team chose to stay in the tunnel for the anthem before their Sunday game, Villanueva exited the tunnel and stood for the anthem with his hand over his heart.

But not everyone was thrilled with Villanueva, who served combat tours in Afghanistan before playing for the NFL.

“I think he was wrong in this situation, Skip,” said Sharpe, who is also a former NFL player. “I believe he put his personal feelings in front of that of the team, and this is a team.”

“If the team took a vote and said, ‘this is what we’re going to do,’ although I understand that he served in the military … this is a team,” Sharpe continued. “We criticize so many athletes when they put their goals, their ideas in front of the team — well that’s what he did. He said, ‘forget what you guys said, this is what I’m going to do.’”

Bayless agreed that Villanueva was wrong to come out of the tunnel for the anthem, stating, “I’m with you, it didn’t work for him to come out of the tunnel if in fact you all agree and voted … to do this as a team, to stand up in the tunnel until the anthem is done.”

Skip Bayless you have no right to criticize anyone. Alejandro did the right thing, thank you for your courage, thank you for your service and thank you for your bravery. Skip Bayless you can’t even begin to be at his level.

Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe…sad commentary… “better to stand with a “rebellious” team than to stand for the Anthem…?? Skip and Shannon will be working where in the future?

the team agreed he could go out but the rest of them were staying in – he didn’t just buck the team. And the ones bucking the system was the rest of the team. Our taxes pay for their patriotic stance. It’s in their contract.

Mr Villanueva had every right to stand for the Anthem, just as you all say that the team had every right to not participate!!! This double standard is getting out of hand, and you people that believe he was wrong should give it more thought! He did it out of respect for the Country that he loves and bravely served. God Bless you Sir.

How dare the Pittsburgh Steelers DISRESPECT their teammate by not standing with him during the national anthem. This man went overseas and fought in two different countries to protect the rights of every American and this is how they thank him? The NFL and most of its members make me want to hurl and I sincerely hope that Lt. Villanueva seriously considers retiring from football because the team and the NFL do not deserve to have this caliber of a man on their team he is way too good for the likes of most of them. They all proved what they think of him and his service to our country.

He was the only player on his team to stand for his country. Fox Sports commentators Skip Bayless and Shannon Sharpe can go to hell; and, they ought to be fired for their comments. Have all of the Fox, ESPN, and other sports media gone communists/socialist on the TV–I have had it with these NFL players that disrespect our country and veterans—fire them all.

Skip you continue to amaze as to how absurd you can be…looks like the team, put their personal views ahead of the team and forced Villanueva to make a decision….which he did and I for one respect him more than the 51 other players and uncounted coaches that cowardly stayed out of the lime light. You sir have no clue what is going on in this society today…..

Sharpe and Bayless you are both idiots. A team vote to be cowardly does not trump the oath, honor, and lifelong respect this hero has for his brothers in arms. Not even close. These players act like fools by kneeling. Then because they cant handle the heat brought onto themselves, they want the entire team to jump into the frying pan by hiding in the shadows. This Veteran served with honor and protected each of us by not hiding in the shadows. He did not run from danger, he faced adversity head on both in battle and as a simple football player. You should both be kissing his cleats.

He swore to an oath as a Ranger that, by far, “Trumps” anything the NFL(Notworthwatching Football League) has! He stood by that oath & for that, I commend him!

He chose personal integrity (on a non-Football matter) over the wishes of a crowd. This is NOT a “football team” issue, it is a matter of personal ethos. The other players made their personal choice, he made his personal choice. The coach is a lout for shaming him in a news conference.
