A dog that got loose during Hurricane Harvey has become a hero after a picture of him carrying a bag of dog food went viral.
German shepherd mix Otis, from Stinton, Texas, got loose during the hurricane on Friday night.
Salvador Segovia, 65, was watching Otis, his five-year-old grandson Carter’s dog. Carter had fled the city because of the flooding.
Segovia realized Otis was gone Friday night and even though he tried calling his name, Otis didn’t return, Chron.com reported.
On Saturday morning, Segovia noticed a bag of Otis’ dog food was gone from his porch, so Segovia drove around the neighborhood to look for the missing dog.
Meanwhile, neighbor Tiele Dockens saw Otis carrying his bag of food and took a picture, which has since gone viral.
She captioned the picture: ‘This dog is walking around Sinton TX carrying a entire bag of dog food with him. LOL #refugee’.
The snap has since had 21,700 shares, 2,000 comments and 8,500 reactions by Saturday night.
One commenter wrote: ‘Must be a Texas dog cause he can survive without help’.
Dockens said she saw Otis while she was checking on the properties of some of her friends who had left town.
‘Lots of people were out in their yards and streets cleaning up branches, trees and debris,’ she told Huffington Post.
Added to the end of her caption, Dockens wrote:’PSA: Owner is found. He is not a stray he just got out on his street. Dogs name is Otis’ (sic).
Thankfully, Segovia was able to find Otis and bring him home before Carter returned.
According to the grandfather, Otis has helped comfort five-year-old Carter, who has had numerous hospital visits for seizures and asthma. He is also well-known in town.
‘Otis can go to Dairy Queen and he can get a hamburger,’ Segovia told Chron.com.
‘He’s the only dog allowed to lie down in front of the county court house. He also goes to H.E.B. He’s not a stray. He’s a good dog.’
The city of Stinton was still without power and water by Saturday evening, HuffPost reported.
