On Thursday, Rep. Al Green (D-TX) abruptly took out his earpiece and walked off camera after being pressed by CNN anchor Kate Bolduan about his failed effort to impeach President Donald Trump.
Green led impeachment proceedings against Trump on Wednesday that embarrassingly went down in flames. The Democrat’s resolution was rejected by the House 332 to 95 — the “no” votes included 137 Democrats.
“You have now tried three times — 2017, 2018, and now 2019 — bringing impeachment to the floor; they’ve failed. Is this one the last one that you’re gonna try?” asked Bolduan.
“It’s absolutely not,” answered Green, noting that he believes Trump “will be impeached and I believe that it is our duty to do so.”
The CNN anchor then suggested Green’s failed vote was fueling Trump’s base and pressed the Democrat over House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s repeated opposition to impeachment efforts.
“Donald Trump is using your effort, and the vote, to rally the base. He talked about it … last night in North Carolina. Are you playing into his hands?”
“The base is not the American people,” Green said dismissively. “The American people don’t wanna tolerate bigotry; I just have faith in the American people. And I will continue; we will march on until victory is won.”
“Nancy Pelosi is also going to stand up against bigotry,” said Bolduan, “but she has been very clear about the path forward for Democrats on impeachment.”
Pelosi has repeatedly rejected radical Democrats’ calls for impeachment; the House leader said in May that such efforts would only be used to “solidify” Trump’s “base,” as pointed out by Bolduan.
“Doesn’t last night prove that?” she asked Green, referring to the failed impeachment resolution vote.
“The speaker and I have the same goal and that’s to do what’s in the best interests of our country,” Green said. “We have different paths but the same goal.”
Then the Democrat took out his earpiece and walked off camera, telling Bolduan: “I must tell you, I have a vote that’s on now and I must leave, so I do appreciate you very much, but I do have to run now. Thank you.”
As noted by The Daily Wire earlier this week, Pelosi vehemently rejected the Green-led impeachment effort. “We have six committees working on following the facts in terms of any abuse of power, obstruction of justice and the rest that the president may have engaged in,” she told the media. “That is the serious path we’re on — not that Mr. Green is not serious, but we’ll deal with that on the floor.”
Trump gloated over the failed vote at a campaign rally and his favorite medium: Twitter.
“The United States House of Representatives has just overwhelmingly voted to kill the Resolution on Impeachment, 332-95-1,” the president wrote. “This is perhaps the most ridiculous and time consuming project I have ever had to work on. Impeachment of your President, who has led the Greatest Economic BOOM in the history of our Country, the best job numbers, biggest tax reduction, rebuilt military and much more, is now OVER. This should never be allowed to happen to another President of the United States again!”
