Megyn Kelly broke down in tears on her NBC show this week as television host Maria Menounous opened up about her brain tumor battle along with her mother’s struggle with cancer.
“I think that this was a gift, because I needed to change my life. I needed to change the way – I did everything,” Menounos said.
Menounos later started to cry as she talked about her mother, who is fighting the same type of brain cancer that Senator John McCain revealed he has been diagnosed with earlier this week.
“I just hope that we can make her one of the long-term survivors. Because I’m worried about her,” Menounos told Kelly, who was fighting back tears at that point. “Nobody ever wants to lose their mom.”
The 39 year-old former E! News host had a benign meningioma that was the size of a golf ball removed this past June in a seven-hour procedure that she elected to undergo on her birthday. Her mother has been battling stage 4 brain cancer for the past year. Menounos realized something was wrong when she began experiencing some of the same symptoms as her mother, including headaches, dizziness and feeling of lightheadedness when she decided to go to see a doctor.
“At some level inside you, do you feel like you knew there was something there that was not supposed to be?” Kelly asked Menounos.
“At that point, when I said all those things out loud to him [doctor], the symptoms mirrored what my mom had. And I realized it in that moment,” said Menounos.
Her doctor told her the news after her MRI results came back.
“He said: ‘I’m so sorry I have to tell you this. Because I know you’re going through a lot with your mom. But you have a brain tumor. It’s called a meningioma. And you need to schedule an appointment with a neurosurgeon right away,’” recalled Menounos. :And so I was like, ‘Okay.’ And I started kind of chuckling.”
Please keep Maria Menounos and her mother in your thoughts and prayers!
