On Monday, an 18-year-old Oklahoma high school student who encountered another student wearing a MAGA hat and a Trump 2020 flag like a cape, blocked the other student from passing him, and snapped, “Take it off or I’ll rip it off… do you want me to rip it off?” and “You going to rip it off or am I going to burn it?” before knocking off the hat and ripping the flag away so he could throw it on the ground.
Now the student might face a criminal charge, as a school resource officer issued an assault and battery summons by a school resource officer.
The assailant has not been charged as yet. A spokeperson for the school stated, “’Given that hats were allowed at school yesterday as part of the week-long fundraising events, there was no specific dress code violation.” This week is Edmond Santa Fe High School’s Double Wolf Dare Week, when students are permitted to wear costumes to raise funds for the school.
According to police, there is a five-day window during which the family of the attacked student can contact the city attorney if they want an assault complaint to be filed, as KOCO 5 reported. KOCO 5 also reported that the family has stated that they intend to pursue criminal assault charges.
Edmond Public Schools officials released a statement that read, “The school district honors students’ First Amendment rights but must, at the same time, be vigilant in teaching and supporting students as they learn how best to respectfully express their opinions.”
The 18-year-old boy told KOCO 5 that he planned to apologize.
There have been numerous incidents in the news recently where people wearing MAGA regalia have been attacked by others; one case involved a woman in Massachusetts assaulting a young man wearing a MAGA hat, getting herself arrested, then winding up in the custody of ICE because she was in the United states illegally.
Another involved an employee of a Vans store in Kansas telling a 14-year-old boy wearing a MAGA hat, “F*** you.” The mother of the boy told the manager; the employee was fired.
In a third incident, in Bowling Green, Kentucky, a man from Tennessee allegedly pulled a gun on a man wearing a Make America Great Again (MAGA) hat, stuck the gun in the MAGA-hat-wearing man’s face and reportedly threatened, “It’s a good day for you to die.” The man who was confronted stated:
My wife was at Sam’s Club shopping Saturday night, and as we was walking up to the check-out line, a man approached us and flipped us off. I didn’t see the initial act; I seen him bringing his hands down and my wife had said, “Did he just flip us off?” And she hollered at him, “Hey, did you flip me off?’” And he turned around and he done it again, and he said, “Yeah, I flipped you off because of them explicative hats you got on.’” And when he said that, I went after him. And I went to him and I said, “What’s your problem, buddy?” And he started screaming at me, so I returned the favor to him. Next thing I know, he drew a .40 caliber and stuck it in my face. Told me, he said, “This is a good day for you to die.” And I asked him, I said, “Well, then, pull the trigger. Either put the gun down or pull the trigger” … And he left, and when he did, I went after him.
