A Man Opened Fire at a Back-to-School Event in Florida — Thank Goodness an Armed Citizen Was There

An unknown number of lives were saved after an armed citizen stopped a shooter at a back-to-school event in Titusville, Florida on Saturday.

The shooting broke out during an event called “Peace in the City.” The event was supposed to be promoting a peaceful start to the new school year. Nearly 200 people were in attendance at the event — most of whom were young students.

An event organizer, Dwight Harvey, captured part of the shooting on his phone.

Police believe the shooter was at the park where the event was hosted prior to the shooting. The gunman allegedly got in a fistfight earlier in the day and left to get his gun. When he returned, he began firing.

A bystander with a permit to carry heard the shooting and fired back at the gunman, hitting him in the head.

Thanks to the quick response by the armed citizen, the gunman was the only person injured during the shooting.

Some of the attendees thought the noise from the shooting stemmed from firecrackers, but they soon realized it was a pistol, terrifying the children.

“My two kids was like, ‘Daddy let’s go, let’s go,”’ said Harvey. “It was kids in the path of those bullets, but thank God none of those kids got hit.”

The gunman is still in the hospital with life-threatening injuries from the gunshot to his head.

According to the police, the armed citizen fully cooperated with the investigation following the shooting, and no charges are expected to be filed.

This back-to-school event shooting in Florida comes just months after the deadly mass shooting in Parkland, Florida. The Stoneman Douglas students brought the issue of school shootings into the limelight with their rally, the March for Our Lives.
