Army Football Outdoes Themselves Yet Again with Game-Day Uniforms Honoring 100 Years Since WWI’s End

Army football went big again this year with the team’s uniforms for Saturday’s Army-Navy game, this time choosing to honor the “Big Red One” on the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

Working with Nike, West Point officials decided to use the design as an opportunity to honor the Army’s first division, which later got the name 1st Expeditionary Division.

This year’s all-black uniforms feature a red number “1” on the top of the helmet, a throwback to the helmets worn by the 1st Expeditionary Division soldiers in battle, who won the first major American victory of the war at the Battle of Cantigny.

Soldiers then earned the nickname, “Black Lions of Cantigny,” which is reflected in the team’s uniforms with the black lions on players’ shoulders. The bronze emblems on the uniforms further “honor the Big One’s 8th, 26th, 18th and 16th Infantry Regiments; 7th and 5th Field Artillery Regiments; and 1st Engineer Regiment.”

As Hawaii and Alaska had not yet been added as states at the time of World War I, the back of the Army players’ helmets don a WW1-era flag with just 48 stars. When the Black Knights ran onto the field, they touched a bronze plaque bearing the quote:

“I want an officer for a secret and dangerous mission. I want a West Point football player.”

The team has chosen to honor a different division of the Army with their game-day uniforms each year since 2016, sporting a tribute to the Pando Commandos of the 10th Mountain Division last year.

At this year’s game against the Navy Midshipmen, President Donald Trump did the honors of the coin toss.

Navy, on the other hand, chose to highlight their new mascot Bill the Goat with their uniforms for the game.
