Comedic Duo Steve Martin and Martin Short Won’t Be Bashing Trump on Stage: ‘We’re Not Here to Preach’

Comedians Steve Martin and Martin Short are leaving aside politics and won’t be bashing President Donald Trump in their Netflix special, “An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life” — instead, they’ll be roasting one another.

Martin makes fun of Short’s height, while Short jokes about Martin’s age of 73, as he’s nearly five years older than his comedic partner, The Daily Beast reported.

Short added it’s no “fake showbiz relationship.”

The duo diverts from joking about politics and President Trump because any other late-night TV show has political material, Martin told IndieWire.

“It’s not something you want to pay [for]. We’re just trying to be funny,” he added.

“Before the election, we did a lot of Trump material, a lot of political material, and it was fine,” Martin said. “After the election, you started to hear comments from the audience, whether it was a yay or a boo, and we said, ‘We don’t want that. We’re not here to preach.’”

“When it comes to politics, you don’t want to make half the audience feel like they’re inappropriate,” Short said. “So even when we’re doing Jiminy Glick, we try to go back and forth.”

“For me, it’s not my forte,” Martin said. “I’m not known as a political comedian for a reason — I actually made a choice a long, long time ago. I just feel it takes the audience out of the show a little bit.”

Short told The Daily Beast that they don’t want to just attract a liberal audience and that they want their audience to feel like it’s a safe zone, which is why they leave behind the Trump comments.

Comedian Kevin Hart also said he didn’t want to alienate part of his audience, so he is avoiding any bashing of President Trump, as previously reported by IJR.

“The world today, it’s really not a laughing matter. It’s serious,” Hart told Variety last year. “I don’t want to draw attention to things I don’t have nice things to say about.”
