DHS Sec Nielsen Slams Dems for Not Listening to the Truth on the Border Crisis During WH Meeting

After meeting with President Donald Trump and top Democratic leaders on Wednesday at the White House, Department of Homeland Security secretary Kirstjen Nielsen blasted Democrats for not listening to her about the crisis going on at the U.S.-Mexico border.

As the president pushes for $5 billion in border wall funding, a proposal Democrats aren’t keen on, top Democrats are seeking to propose a shutdown-halting bill that would fund most of the government through September and provide another month to negotiate wall funding, as IJR News reported.

Nielsen wrote on Twitter following the meeting on Wednesday that she’s “disappointed” in the Democrats for not listening to the DHS about the “security & humanitarian crisis we are facing at the border,” adding that the top Democratic leaders “didn’t want to hear about criminal aliens, drug smugglers, smuggled & abused children or violent caravans trying to breach the border wall.”

The DHS secretary made clear the immigration problem at the southern border “is not going away-it is getting worse,” and “kicking the can down the road is not the answer.”

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) also shared his disappointment in Democrats because “once the Secretary started, Senator Schumer interrupted her and they really didn’t want to hear it and they challenged some of the points the Secretary made.”

“The president’s not going to sign it … Now’s the time to come together, find common ground and solve this problem,” McCarthy said after Wednesday’s meeting, according to The Washington Post. “I didn’t find the Democrats were wanting to negotiate today.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Senate Republicans would not approve legislation if President Trump didn’t support it.

“We’re asking the president to open up government,” Pelosi told reporters. “We have given the Republicans a chance to take ‘yes’ for an answer.”

Congressional leaders are expected to meet again with President Trump at the White House on Friday, as Democrats hope to end the government shutdown while Republicans continue to seek funding for the border wall.
