Elizabeth Warren on Mollie Tibbetts Murder: We Need to Focus on ‘Real Problems’ Like Family Separation

Many Americans were devastated to hear about the death of Mollie Tibbetts, the 20-year-old college student who was murdered while jogging in Iowa.

Tibbetts was likely killed by Cristhian Rivera, an illegal immigrant. Authorities saw Rivera’s car following Tibbetts while she was out jogging. After questioning, Rivera brought investigators to her body.

While many were horrified by this murder by an illegal immigrant, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) told CNN that policymakers need to focus on “real problems,” like family separation at the border.

Watch:

One of the things we have to remember is that we need an immigration system that is effective, that focuses on where real problems are. I think we need immigration laws that focus on people who pose a real threat and I don’t think mommas and babies are the place where we should be spending our resources.

Although Warren did concede that there are some illegal immigrants that pose a “real threat,” her real concern seemed to be family reunification. The senator didn’t say who or what situations would qualify as real threats.

Many found Warren’s comments to be a real problem.

Warren is one of the most prominent Democrats to hop on the abolish-ICE bandwagon, writing, “We need to rebuild our immigration system from top to bottom, starting by replacing ICE with something that reflects our values.”
