‘I Had Concerns for the First Lady’: President Trump Expresses His Hesitation in Bringing Melania to Iraq

President Donald Trump made a visit to Iraq to thank the troops for their service after Christmas, but he admitted that he was concerned for first lady Melania Trump’s safety during the trip.

As IJR previously reported, the Trumps visited Iraq and had a warm welcome from the troops, despite attacks from some in the media who falsely claimed that he was the only president to not visit the troops for Christmas.

Some in the media jumped the gun in criticizing Trump for not visiting the troops because the visit was kept under wraps for the safety of the president and those who joined him.

President Trump explained the nerve-wracking flight into Iraq, especially noting his concern for his wife, Melania.

“When I heard what you have to go through [to enter Iraq safely]. I mean, look, I had concerns for the institution of the presidency, not for myself personally. I had concerns for the first lady, I will tell you, but if you would have seen what we had to go through, with the darkened plane, all the windows closed, with no lights on whatsoever, anywhere — pitch black. I’ve never seen that.

I’ve been in many airplanes all types and shapes and sizes, I’ve never seen anything like it. We’re coming in and I know all of the things that were surrounding us for safety. So did I have a concern? Yeah. I had a concern. But my bigger concern was maybe the people that were with me. Certainly all of them.”

Trump joked that he wasn’t concerned for National Security Advisor John Bolton because he’s a “pretty tough guy,” adding, “John can handle it.”

Although the president may have felt uneasy about the safety of his wife and the rest of the administration, they made it safely through their visit.

President Trump has announced plans to pull many troops out of the region, including a withdrawal from Syria and, potentially, Afghanistan.
