We’ve all grown accustomed to the fact that ridiculous political talking points will make the rounds in the wake of a police-involved shooting – but this one may take the cake in that regard.
Earlier this month, an unarmed Australian woman was shot and killed by a Somali-born police officer in Minnesota.
The woman had called 911 to report a sexual assault in progress, and it remains unclear why the responding officer opened fire on her.
Reaction to this unfortunate incident has been relatively muted in comparison to other police-involved shootings, but there has still been plenty of outrage directed towards the police department.
Raymond Dehn, a member of the Democratic Farmer Labor Party, has thrown his hat into the ring for the upcoming Minneapolis mayoral race.
This makes for a perfect time for him to make an outrageous headline-chasing proposal.
Breitbart passes along the scoop on that, noting that “Dehn believes officers should be disarmed of sidearms.”
Before jumping to conclusions and regarding this as one of the most asinine things you’ve ever heard, you can take some solace in the fact that Dehn has thought this through.
“I would believe they would still have access to their guns in their cars,” he said, according to Breitbart.
“I think as we look at how to change policing and how we get officers to not react to use their gun in situations, but learning skills around de-escalation training I think are important,” Fox 9 further quotes him as stating.
Lt. Bob Kroll, the leader of the police union in the area, quickly threw some cold water on Dehn’s brainchild.
“Who would ever do the job of policing again?” he said, according to Breitbart.
“It’s absolutely an absurd thought.”
Current Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges agrees.
“If we are going to talk about changes in gun policy, we shouldn’t start with police officer who are going to be operating in a world with people who have guns,” said Hodges according to Fox 9.
Let’s be honest, when even Betsy Hodges disagrees with you, you know you’re out of touch.
