Nancy Pelosi Tries to Defend Her Hawaiian Vacation Amid Government Shutdown With Lame Swipe at Trump

As Democrats battle with President Donald Trump on border wall funding and the partial government shutdown continues, House Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is defended her vacation in Hawaii amid the shutdown while taking a jab at the president.

As IJR Red reported, Pelosi was caught soaking up some sun at a luxury hotel where rooms reportedly ranged from $899 to $4,899 a night. This was in stark contrast to Trump, who canceled his holiday plans to stay in Washington, D.C., “in the White House waiting for the Democrats to come on over and make a deal on Border Security.”

During Pelosi’s appearance on NBC’s “Today” show on Thursday, host Savannah Guthrie said Trump “took a swipe” at the congresswoman for vacationing.

“I observed the Christmas holiday for a few days, and I cut in half the time I would have had with my family,” Pelosi responded.

Guthrie then asked if it was a “cheap shot” taken by the president toward Pelosi.

Pelosi responded by calling her vacation “totally unimportant” because “the fact is we all stood ready, and we told our members we’ll have 24 hours notice for all of us to be where we need to be.”

She then took a jab at the president’s knowledge.

“The president may not know this, but Hawaii is part of the United States of America,” Pelosi said. “Maybe he doesn’t realize that.”

Trump’s counselor, Kellyanne Conway, also previously blasted Pelosi’s vacation to Hawaii while refusing to budge on border wall funding, as IJR Red reported.

“Less hula, more moola,” Conway said.

As IJR News noted, Democrats are planning to end the shutdown by adopting a bill once Pelosi is elected as speaker of the House on Thursday, but the bill wouldn’t include funding for a border wall. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) called the idea of the bill a “political sideshow.”
