‘No Regrets’: Oakland Mayor Stands by Decision to Tip Off Migrants About ICE Raid

Oakland, California, Mayor Libby Schaaf caught national attention earlier this year when she decided to alert her residents of an impending raid by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

In response, former ICE Director Tom Homan criticized Schaaf for helping criminals avoid punishment.

“That community is a lot less safe than it would have been,” he said.

Despite the criticism she received, Schaaf recently told BuzzFeed News that she had “no regrets” about her warning.

“I have no regrets, none,” she said. “The more time goes by, the more certain I feel that I did the right thing in standing up for our community and pointing out our values are not aligned with our laws.”

Schaaf also knocked ICE, saying that the agency had “gone astray.”

“This agency has gone astray and has so broken the trust, particularly in cities like mine, I believe we would all be better served to start from scratch,” she said.

Her comments came in the midst of a migrant crisis that the administration attributed to laws and an immigration system that incentivized people to try to cross the border illegally.

On Twitter, Schaaf blamed President Donald Trump for the current government shutdown, retweeting Sen. Kamala Harris’ (D-Calif.) criticisms.

Trump has made clear that he will not back down from demanding a border wall before opening the government.
