Schumer Calls on Trump to ‘Abandon The Wall’ to End the Shutdown — It Doesn’t Look Likely

Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) recently threatened a prolonged shutdown during a speech on the Senate floor.

Schumer has been an outspoken critic of the border wall and says he will not change his strategy due to the recent government shutdown.

“It will never pass the Senate, not today, not next week, not next year. So President Trump, if you want to open the government, you must abandon the wall, plain and simple,” said Schumer.

Schumer claimed that the shutdown would not be over until President Trump compromises and stops pushing for the border wall.

“When those negotiations produce a solution that is acceptable to all parties — which means 60 votes in the Senate, a majority in the House, and a presidential signature — at that point, we will take it up here on the Senate floor,” Schumer said.

However, Republican lawmakers claim that Trump backing down from the fight is highly unlikely due to the need for higher border security and his desire to deliver on campaign promises.

Although Democrats have been known to be opposed to strict border security, Schumer claimed that was not the truth.

“I’ve heard the president and his allies in the media say that Democrats don’t support border security. Nothing could be further from the truth. Democrats have always been for smart and effective ways to secure our border,” he said. “We are pushing for technology, like drones and sensors, and inspection equipment.”

Trump has said that they are looking into options, but suggestions from Democrats are not enough to ensure a strong border. It is uncertain how long the shutdown will last or who will eventually give in to a solution.
