It would appear almost ludicrous after the seismic historical election of President Donald Trump, vowing to end the scourge of sanctuary cities, along with a supporting governor willing to cut off funds that anyone would be foolish enough to resist, moreover refuse to comply with federal immigration laws.
Perhaps someone should sit the newly elected sheriff of Travis County, Texas, Sally Hernandez down and explain to her that Governor George Abbott is serious and will indeed cut federal funding, as mandated by President Trump.
The Governor’s Office will cut funding for Travis County adopting sanctuary policies. Stiffer penalties coming. https://t.co/yYxeXql3xL

However it would appear that the sheriff is ready to do battle, and has notified the county that she will not comply with Gov. Abbott or the Trump Administration, and the county is slated to lose big bucks in federal grants, because the governor’s office requires that all counties must be in compliance with federal oversight to receive those federal grants, moreover it isn’t quite clear if Gov. Abbott has any other recourse other than losing federal funding for his state, by forcing Sheriff Hernandez to comply with federal authorities
Perhaps Abbott should give Sheriff Hernandez a remedial course in math in that the Travis County sheriff’s office has a $169 million budget, of which $1.8 million would represent 1% of the budget.
Traditionally, the county has always cooperated with federal enforcement Immigration and Customs Agents regarding suspects being booked, when agents wanted to investigate further the status of the suspect being held.
However as of February 1st Sheriff Hernandez will no honor requests by the feds, when it comes to “detainers” placed by federal authorities unless the suspect is booked within the Travis County on charges of “capital murder, aggravated sexual assault”, and “continuous smuggling of persons.”
Furthermore Hernandez announced: “The public must be confident that local law enforcement is focused on local public safety, not on federal immigration enforcement. Our jail cannot be perceived as a holding tank for ICE or that Travis County deputies are ICE officers.”
Gov. Abbott is not playing games. “Stiffer penalties are coming.”
