Trump: Drones Are ‘Lots Of Fun,’ But Only A ‘Good Old Fashioned Wall’ Will Protect America

Unlike lawmakers in Congress, President Trump has canceled his Christmas vacation so he can stay in Washington, D.C., to continue work toward a compromise bill that will fund the federal government, which is now partially shut down.

On Sunday, the president said a barrier the only real way “to stop drugs, gangs, human trafficking, criminal elements and much else from coming into our Country is with a Wall or Barrier.”

“The only way to stop drugs, gangs, human trafficking, criminal elements and much else from coming into our Country is with a Wall or Barrier. Drones and all of the rest are wonderful and lots of fun, but it is only a good old fashioned Wall that works!” Trump wrote on Twitter.

Democratic lawmakers in the Senate oppose a House-passed bill that sets aside $5.7 billion for a border barrier. While the amount seems like a lot, it’s just 0.13% of the massive federal budget.

Trump sent several tweets out on Saturday pushing for the barrier.

“The crisis of illegal activity at our Southern Border is real and will not stop until we build a great Steel Barrier or Wall. Let work begin!” he wrote.

The president also posted a tweet on Friday showing a mockup of a towering barrier with spikes on top, saying: “A design of our Steel Slat Barrier which is totally effective while at the same time beautiful!”

Meanwhile, lawmakers adjourned and went home. They won’t return until December 27.

Only about a quarter of the government is shut down as many crucial departments have already been funded.

“Social Security checks will go out and troops will remain at their posts. Doctors and hospitals will receive their Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements. The U.S. Postal Service, busy delivering packages for the holiday season, is an independent agency and won’t be affected. Passport services, which are funded by fees and not government spending, will also continue,” the Associated Press wrote on Sunday.

“Virtually every essential government agency, including the FBI, the Border Patrol and the Coast Guard, will remain open. Transportation Security Administration officers will staff airport checkpoints.”
