Steelers Coach Unhappy Army Vet Villanueva Stood for the Anthem – but Look at His T-shirt Sales Skyrocket

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin indicated Sunday night that he did not want offensive tackle Alejandro Villanueva to stand for the national anthem, instead of sitting it out with the rest of his teammates.

Villanueva, a former Army Ranger who served three tours in Afghanistan, was the only Steelers player to stand for the anthem. While Villanueva stood in the tunnel, hand over his heart, the rest of the team remained in the locker room in protest of President Trump’s comments that players who kneel during the national anthem should be fired.

Tomlin said in a post-game press conference that he was looking for “100 percent participation” in whatever course of action the team took during the national anthem.

When asked by a reporter about Villanueva coming out for the anthem, Tomlin said, “Like I said, I was looking for 100 percent participation, we were gonna be respectful of our football team.”

Villaneuva played in college at the United States Military Academy before going on to become an Army Ranger. He served three tours in Afghanistan and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Valor. He signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2014, before later joining the Steelers.

Sales of the former Army Ranger’s jersey on Fanatics.com shot up to the highest-seller among Pittsburgh Steelers jersey as of just 10 PM Eastern time.

Additionally, Villanueva’s jersey sales rocketed into the top sellers in the entire league as of 7:45 PM EST behind only Marshawn Lynch, Derek Carr, Carson Wentz, Brown, and Aaron Rodgers, 247 Sports reported.

Villanueva, who played football at West Point Military Academy, later went on to become an Army Ranger and served three tours in Afghanistan. He also was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Valor. Prior to playing for the Steelers, he played for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2014.

Despite Steelers’s coach Mike Tomlin wanting all of his players to remain in the locker room, Villanueva did otherwise.

That is what they do THEY make it about race and when a God forbid a white person says something they try and turn it around on us calling us racists, in reality, THEY are the racists.I am sick and tired of hearing about the NFL and all of their bullshit they are not worth the time nor the energy. I applaud Lt. Villanueva he appears to be the only man in that whole pack of Steelers. He served our country with honor what have any of these other football players accomplished I will tell you not a damn thing.

Truth is not ALL the black players in the NFL took a knee. Many did not. Some white did and many did not. I have no problem with a protest however to do it on the job that offends an audience that has paid big dollars is not the place. These players are over paid entertainment and the place and time is not appropriate. I do wonder why those that did kneel never before spoke out against all the black on black violence. Many of the Police that did their jobs were blacks I know but the criminal acts of those that do are totally ignored!! Crazy.

Mike Tomlin should be fired. He is a disgrace to the flag, the country and he is NOT OPPRESSED!!!! These oppressed people got free college, they are treated like royalty and the only social injustice is the rip off price of the tickets to go see these overpaid whiners playing a stupid football game Sickening!!!!

Did he really believe an Army combat vet was not going to stand ? He did not stay with the other players but he served with his many brothers that sacrificed and they thought he would disrespect them. No fool. As a combat vet of many tours I would never never put anything family above my brothers at arms. We soldiers are of the same blood.

The coach is wrong ….. it is not about the team. It is about honor for all individuals that have served and are serving in the military. It is about respect for all the sacrifices made on behalf of this nation. It is not about race or oppression. If you think you are oppressed in America then move to N. Korea or another third world country.

Mr. {I will not give you thee honor of calling you coach} Tomlin, I thought that you are still tasked with the job of turning these BOYS into men. If it was not for this great country giving ALL the chance to reap the bounty’s of their skill these BOYS would not be making the kind of money that they really don’t deserve. I realize that these BOYS could probably K my A one one one but having been in the military myself, they best watch their back while they attack me. I am Irish and my forefathers were treated as badly, if not worse than the people that cling to the word slave. You are correct, football is a team sport, but it is not a sport that honors one coach over another just because you don’t want to work as hard as you are asked! GROW UP ALL OF YOU AND HONOR THOSE THAT GIVE YOU THE RIGHT AND ABILITY TO MAKE EMBARRASSING AMOUNTS OF MONEY!
God bless you and the BOYS, just remember where you are and why you exist!

    Hey coach! Follow these rules.
The specific rule pertaining to the national anthem is found on pages A62-63 of the league rulebook. It states:

“The National Anthem must be played prior to every NFL game, and all players must be on the sideline for the National Anthem.

“During the National Anthem, players on the field and bench area should stand at attention, face the flag, hold helmets in their left hand, and refrain from talking. The home team should ensure that the American flag is in good condition. It should be pointed out to players and coaches that we continue to be judged by the public in this area of respect for the flag and our country. Failure to be on the field by the start of the National Anthem may result in discipline, such as fines, suspensions, and/or the forfeiture of draft choice(s) for violations of the above, including first offenses.”

IFire the coach . I have to agree . when a white person does something it’s racism but when a black steals and tries to shot a policeman and gets killed it’s ok to riot burn buildings loot act like trash. Give me a break I’m tired of black lives matter what about white lives matter . Worried about kkk what about black panthers. White people have sat back to long. We can’t let this continue if we do our country is gone. I don’t have time to march I work !! We are letting them take our history and change it. Do you really believe all the blacks in prison are innocent?? How many of them even thought about serving our country. Get behind Alejandro Villanueva he deserves our support. What a hero !!!

Our best protest regarding this stupidity is to refuse to go to the games or buy their merchandise and find something else to do during football season. Perhaps support a little league team.

I’m ashamed of every person who thinks that disrespecting the flag and the veterans who served this country, is an accepted way to protest anything. If you want to protest, don’t use disrespect. Put a portion of your VERY ample paycheck towards the cause of your choice.
