Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) praised President Donald Trump for holding top Democrats’ feet to the fire on border security.
On Tuesday, Trump sat down in front of the press with Minority Leaders Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to discuss their meeting on the final appropriation bills, including the one that will decide the future of Trump’s border wall.
The meeting was quite contentious. As IJR previously reported, the central dispute between the two sides was that Trump has threatened to shut down the government if he is not given funding for the border wall.
As IJR Blue reported, Schumer sees Trump’s shutdown threat as nothing but a “temper tantrum,” but that’s not how Cruz saw it.
Cruz told Fox News’ Sean Hannity that he thought Trump was doing what he promised he would do during his campaign: He fought for Americans who want a wall to secure the southern border.
“The American people have, for a long time, been frustrated with Washington, frustrated with too many elected officials who don’t follow through on their promises. They want us to do what we said we would do. You know, I watched that whole exchange with the president, Chuck Schumer, and Nancy Pelosi and I think the president was terrific, that he was standing up and saying, ‘We’re going to keep our promise. We’re going to secure our border. We’re going to build a wall.’”
Cruz also applauded Trump for forcing Pelosi’s hand during the negotiations by having the argument in front of the press, instead of behind closed doors.

Cruz noted that this move showed the American people what the two sides are fighting for, saying:
“One of the surest indications of how unhappy the Democrats were in that exchange is over and over again, Nancy Pelosi says, ‘Can we turn the TV cameras off? We’re not supposed to be doing this publically.’ You can tell they’re on the losing end of the argument when she’s scared that cameras are showing that her and the Democrats are for open borders and the president is fighting to do what the American people want.”
Although Cruz said he doesn’t want to see the government shutdown, he claimed it is the Democrats who are being the “obstructionists” and called building the wall “the right thing to do.”
