Two Football Players Protested During the National Anthem. What Their Marine Vet Coach Did Next…

Following a record number of national anthem protests before NFL games last weekend, two football players at Victory & Praise Christian Academy decided to follow the example and protest the anthem. Cedric Ingram-Lewis raised his fist in the air and his cousin, Larry McCullough, knelt. But their Marine veteran coach wanted absolutely nothing to do with it.

The Houston Chronicle reports:

After the anthem ended, head coach Ronnie Mitchem instructed them to take off their uniforms and kicked them off the team. Mitchem is a former Marine and pastor who started the church-based football program in Crosby six years ago.

Ingram-Lewis, a sophomore, said the topic of protesting had come up in the locker room before and his cousin McCullough, a senior, even announced he would kneel via social media. The coach had told players he did not want anyone to kneel, citing his service in the military.

After the game, Lewis said, “He told us that disrespect will not be tolerated. He told us to take off our uniform and leave it there.” Lewis’s mom stated she supported their decision to protest the national anthem. She said:

“I’m definitely going to have a conversation because I don’t like the way that that was handled.

But I don’t want them back on the team. A man with integrity and morals and ethics and who truly lives by that wouldn’t have done anything like that.

Actions speak louder than words. So, for him to do what he did, that really spoke volumes and I don’t want my kids or my nephew to be around a man with no integrity.”

Ronnie Mitchem, the team’s coach, said he made a deal with the players that they would not kneel, and he supported their right to protest, but he wanted them to do it in other ways than during the anthem. He stated:

“That was my point of view. Like I said, I’m a former Marine. That just doesn’t fly and they knew that. I don’t have any problem with those young men. We’ve had a good relationship. They chose to do that and they had to pay for the consequences.”

It will be interesting to see if NFL owners start to take the same approach as ratings have tanked since the protests began.

The mother needs to do some serious soul searching. She is saying that her son should defy those in authority. That is the wrong message to send.

I think what the coach did was inspiring! Maybe if the NFL took a page out of this persons book all this overly sensitive liberal crap would finely be over! It’s time that “we the people” start standing up for our rights! Just saying…

GOOD FOR YOU COACH…. IT HAD TO START SOMEWHERE AND LETS FACE IT, SURE WAS NOT THE TIME OR PLACE TO GO POLITICAL. ANYONE THAT HAS CHOSEN TO LIVE HERE IN THE UNITED STATES OWES DIGNITY AND RESPECT TO THE FLAG AND MEN AND WOMEN OF UNIFORM.

the mother says coach has no morals or ethics and is pissed because of what coach did. he told the team not to do that those two boys had bragged about what they were going to do. they went to the field and basically told the coach F you we will do what we want and as coach he had the right to do what he did. what kind of ethics if the mother condones disrespect of the coach and rules

.Thank you Coach, people need to learn from their actions, if they want to protest then tell them to go out and take a stand for what they believe in and do so by their actions in helping people and talking to others about what they want to happen and make a change happen by their actions

The word “no” appears to have been inserted accidentally.

I don’t have a problem with the Coach/Marine Vet, or the two football players, Lewis’s Mom is very upset with the Coach, why? The team knew what the consequences would be it was stressed before the game. This is a Church based football, mostly it does not emulate secular ideas,or liberal-left sided populist movements. Lewis’s Mom must have known this. I hope Coach will give them another chance

Another chance to disrespect their Country and their caring coach again? I am extremely proud of that fine man for sticking to his principles! The players were told what was expected of them.

Seems the boys problem probable comes from the mom. If she doesn’t see (or want to see), the boys were told what not to do, and did it in direct response. They were warned, and violated the rules. They got exactly what they deserved. They have a right to protest in the appropriate location, but as members of the team, they need to follow the rules. One must take responsibility for ones actions.

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
In this case a player action resulted in a Coach reaction.
    Well done, Coach!

Excellent Coach! This is the perfect way to deal with this disrespect. Attitude in developing minds is critical. These young boys are learning a lesson in manner and integrity. It is too bad the bad mother doesn’t have a husband to discipline her boys. Discipline is an act of love and concern, without it we only need to look at the NFL. This entire issue stems around the black community for refusing to assimilate into society, Those that do have much healthier and productive lives. America doesn’t have and adjective in front of the name. It is not black or white America. This sepertates our country, all thanks to Obama’s racism.

You absolutely did the right thing.

You are the man in my book.

I bet you are ice cream bar Coach, that the pair of defendants will be at your door, just after you toss the first one’s Mom, out of that door. They will be there with ears drooping down and tails dragging the floor. That would be exactly what I would be looking for, would expect; and which would give me hope, that the pair did something really stupid, now they realize that; now they are seeking forgiveness, the type of forgiveness that is above just being on, and now off of their team, severed from the fellow team-mates.

If they were good, mediocre, or sub-par players that type of behavior is wrong, you delivered to them a life’s message and I thank you for doing that.

Now … back to the door; if the pair you kicked off, can find the courage, can see the common sense that you illuminated for them with the toss off of the team, to come to that door of your office in full remorse then apologize to you, and the team and the School, I would grant them team membership once again. At first, I would have them on that last squad, telling them Real Men have their old positions, you must earn them back.

Great job coach. Iymt obvious that those young men had no guidance in their life until you came along (by his moms reaction),so you helped those young men in the future more than you’ll ever know. Great Job!
